The month of August is now upon us. This is a month of anticipation for sports fans in the USA, but not full of anything too terribly exciting. There is the PGA Championship and tennis' US Open, but neither golf nor tennis inflames the majority of sports fans in America. Hockey and basketball are dormant, and baseball and football are a month away from anything of real significance.



Now, when September arrives we can talk: the baseball divisional races will be in full swing, college football will have just begun and the NFL's opening weekend, full of couch-sitting, beer drinking and yelling at our television sets, will have ignited the passions of millions.



So, what does a sports fan do during these dog days of summer? Well, the die-hard baseball fans are thinking about trades and getting ready for the final push, while the true football fans are thinking about pre-season rosters and dreaming about national championships or Super Bowl victories. Everyone else, though, has to find his own way. Some will watch tennis and golf, others will go out and play sports themselves, still others will go on vacation and not turn on their televisions for four weeks.



As for me, I'll continue to watch baseball with keen interest. I'll only start to give football any mind once the season starts, and I'll watch the PGA. The US Open will be an afterthought. Mostly, I'll be marking off the days in anticipation of September.
