A Bad Second Act

Once, when I was performing the role of Sharpless in a school production, during my scene with Butterfly (where I try to tell her that Pinkerton won't be returning to her) my collar popped off on one side! Now, this wasn't the typical collar one thinks of today: this was one made of stiff paper, and it went SPROING!!! pointing toward whomever I was facing like an accusatory finger.

Talk about drawing focus from the action! When I finally exited the audience was laughing out loud while I, backstage, was furious to have been upstaged by a mere piece of paper! I flung my hat in frustration (it's a real no-no to abuse the costume like that, by the way!), too upset at the time to realize that: a) everyone else had been upstaged, too, b) I had learned an important lesson about being prepared for the unforeseen, and c) it would make for a great story.

And it has.
